While so many people think there’s a magic pill that can transform skin in an instant, the truth is, it’s how you treat your skin every day that matters. It’s also what will reveal the best results as you age. Daily skin care is so important and I believe certain steps are a must-have for optimal skin health: Cleanse, exfoliate, target, moisturize, SPF. That may seem like a lot of steps, but each one supports the next step and preps skin to better absorb products and ingredients so that you see healthy, beautiful skin every day.

Aging can be hard to process. But if we can slow down the signs why not, right? So before I talk about what’s important in a simple skin care routine after 50, here’s a quick story…

The day I turned 30, I was a wreck. After years of enjoying my carefree youth, the idea that my 20s (and going to bed late and waking up with makeup smeared all over the pillowcase) were over was quite a lot to process. I was a new mom, dealing with Post-Partum Depression, and for the first time had barely any time to even shower. So worrying about my skin was the last thing on my mind. I remember thinking I have lots of time to worry about “those” things. At least I am not 50!

How wrong was I! In my experience, a woman’s 50s are some of the best years of her life. She’s more confident. Her relationships are stronger. Her kids become her best friends. And in the case of my skin… It has never looked better!

My 5 must–haves of a good skin care routine after 50

  1. Weekly exfoliation – Proper exfoliation to uncover the fresh new cells below. Exfoliating preps your skin by removing the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin so it can better absorb the rest of your skin care regimen, which makes everything more effective.

Lemongrass Spa’s Microdermabrasion Creme is my Holy Grail product and the one that has literally transformed my skin. This exfoliating creme helps reveal younger, fresher, glowing skin underneath by softening age spots, reduces the appearance of pores, and smoothing away fine lines. Just 2 minutes once a week and you’ll notice improved texture, pores and radiance (and in my case fading to non-existent purple acne scars). I love using this in the shower. TIP: Steam enhances exfoliation so you see even better results.

  1. Moisture is key – During your 50’s, your skin begins to lose its tone. This can result in sagging skin, which can make a woman look older. With healthy, hydrated skin, a woman can help to minimize any sagging around her face and neck. One way to keep the skin moisturized is with regular face cremes.

Lemongrass Spa’s Botanical Face Crème and Ultra Hydrating Facial Crème (for added hydration) are my go-to products.

And, don’t forget the sunscreen! Now that I’m older, I know better. And I use daily sun protection at the end of my morning skin care regimen.

  1. Up the antioxidants – Your skin care routine after 50 should include products rich in peptides, anti-oxidants like hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C. These compounds can help smooth, soften, plump, and brighten the skin and neck area while it hydrates. It’s a simple change, but it can make a big difference to slowing down the skin’s aging process by reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and discolored skin.

Lemongrass Spa’s Vitamin C Serum (20% Vitamin C), Anti-Aging Serum, & Skin Lightening Serum are products you might consider adding to your regimen.

  1. Always use eye creme – Dark circles, puffiness, wrinkles, and fine lines are just a few of the problems a woman can encounter around her eyes, and these problems can cause some older women’s self-esteem to go down. Thankfully, there are many eye cremes available to eliminate these issues. Using an eye creme is something every woman should adopt in their fifties and continue to use well into their later years.

Lemongrass Spa’s Probiotic Eye Gel & Hydrating Eye Crème (along with our Jade-Roller) are 2 of my must-haves.

  1. Don’t forget your lips – Our lips need special consideration in our skin care choices as we get older. You see, if you aren’t careful, those lips can turn on you, looking wrinkled and weathered in a way that could age even the most youthful-looking woman. To avoid these wrinkles (and to help your lips maintain their natural shape), start making regular use of any product that targets specifically the area around your mouth.

*I use our Probiotic Eye Gel along the upper lip. With its added hyaluronic acid to attract moisture, I love the “plumping effect”.

The best way to keep skin healthy and to love how your skin looks as you age is to use products and ingredients that are expertly formulated to deliver visible results without irritating your skin. If you don’t know how to recognize the marketing from what’s real, ask for help. And it’s important to know that as you age, your skin’s needs change, and so your products need to change, too. What worked in your 20s may not be what’s best for skin in your 30s, and the same goes for when you’re in your 40s, 50s, 60s, etc.

Just by making a few of these strategic changes to your skin care routine after 50 (including drinking plenty of water and getting in a little exercise) you can make a world of difference to your overall appearance. When you look your very best and when you feel your very best, you’ll have the confidence to live your life to the fullest – and if you ask me, that’s the only way to live it!
